This blog documents my research project, where I am working on mapping gene and transcript annotations using pangenome graphs. I’ll be sharing insights into the scientific problems I’m tackling, the tools and methods I’m learning, and reflections on what it’s like to contribute to a collaborative research project. Along the way, I’ll write about challenges, breakthroughs, and the skills I’m developing in computational biology.

During a micro-internship with CodeDay, sponsored by EBSCO, I worked on the Open Energy Dashboard (OED) project, where I spent a month navigating and contributing to the codebase. The main task was to implement a test case to validate the accuracy of the API's data, ensuring that the OED system, which displays energy usage data, provides correct and reliable readings. The project required learning new technologies like JavaScript, Mocha, and Chai for testing, and understanding the complex structure of the codebase. Despite the challenges of adapting to these technologies, I successfully implemented the test case, which compared API responses to expected results, ensuring the system's reliability for its users, including government agencies. This experience sharpened my skills in troubleshooting, code analysis, and collaborating within a development team.

During my Summer Open-Source Experience, I reflect on my experience contributing to Oppia, an open-source educational platform, where my teammates and I tackled challenges like setting up the development environment, debugging production issues, and learning new technologies like Angular and TypeScript. We worked on tasks such as fixing a 404 error and improving the tagging system, all while honing skills in problem-solving, time management, and collaboration. This journey reinforced the importance of structured learning and persistence, providing valuable insights for anyone looking to contribute effectively to open-source projects.
